CARDBOARD

Bruunshåb Gl. Papfabrik is a working factory museum. The listed factory buildings are situated next to a mill pond surrounded by a bog. Behind them, to the north, is a steep, forested slope. The wood is known as Cardboard Wood, because part of it was planted during the previous century by the owner of the cardboard factory.

The site has been home to a cardboard factory since 1919. Before then, the buildings served as a cloth mill. Until 1986, Bruunshåb was run on commercial terms, during its final years under three different owners, the last of whom had to declare bankruptcy for the factory in 1986.

Some of the buildings were sold off, and in January 1987, the mill reopened as a factory museum.

Bruunshåb Gl. Papfabrik is the last factory in Denmark to produce fibreboard. Fibreboard is made of 100% recycled paper, including newsprint, print publications and the rolls from toilet paper and paper towels.

Fibreboard is both stable and flexible. It is pH-neutral and comes in both undyed grey and bespoke colours, the latter for a minimum order of 400 kg of pulp. Optional finishes include lacquer or a textured imprint, the latter is known as leatherboard.

The factory supplies a number of companies in Denmark and abroad, including shoe factories, bookbinders, brush makers and the box factories Elvo Copenhagen and Vestergaard in Aarhus.

The factory also has a department that produces fibreboard boxes, luggage for children, waste bins and urns.

No order is too small.

During the summer, visitors to the factory museum can observe the production, which involves an intricate transmission system with axles, wheels and drive belts powering the old machines that turn wastepaper into cardboard. During the winter, it is too cold to invite people in, but in fact, the production is active all year round.
