Maker’s Dimension

A graduation exhibition with pieces created by 15 bachelors from the Royal Danish Academy
– Design, Bornholm, class of 2021,
specializing in glass and ceramics.

The exhibition, which was previously shown at Bornholms Kunstmuseum (Bornholm’s Art Museum) and at CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, is open until 30 January 2022 at:

The exhibition shows the culmination of three years’ work, ‘We immersed ourselves in a process of exploring and challenging the materials of glass and ceramics in design and crafts,’ they write in the invitation, adding: ‘There has been a general tendency to seek inspiration in our surrounding narratives, which is then translated into our individual artistic expressions. As a group, we drew inspiration from different craft traditions and cultural phenomena that, in one way or another, are reflective of contemporary culture.

This exhibition aims to generate dialogue between object and viewer. We hereby invite you to explore the outcome: Maker’s Dimension.’

All the students approached their task with dedication and commitment. It is an excellent exhibition.

 

As evident from both the invitation and the film, the students are reflective and capable of articulating their project, which, as I see it, springs from a desire to find one’s place in the world, as a person and as an artist.

Apart from Maria Kildahl Mathiasen, who made a tea set, the students prefer to express themselves in objects of art rather than utilitarian objects, not at the cost of a focus on material and technique but in cooperation with them.

If this happens at the cost of something, if there is a loss associated with the choice, the loss is mine – I never stop enjoying beautiful utilitarian objects and strongly feel that glass and ceramics derives much of its beauty in use. Does the world really need more cups and plates? Strictly speaking, no; but then, strictly speaking, we really don’t need much of anything, do we?

 

I went to the island of Bornholm in November, visiting the Royal Danish Academy in order to meet some of the current students in the glass line and talk to them about their views about this and many other issues. The result is an article that you can look forward to reading in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 6, which comes out late March 2022. (You can pre-order your copy here).

Udstillingen viser kulminationen af tre års arbejde, ”vi har fordybet os i at udforske og udfordre materialerne glas og keramik indenfor design og kunsthåndværk”, skriver de i invitationen og fortsætter: ”Der har været en gennemgående tendens til at søge inspiration i vores omkringliggende narrativer, som transformeres til hvert vores kunstneriske formsprog. Som gruppe har vi fundet inspiration i forskellige kunsthåndværkere traditioner og kulturelle fænomener, som på den ene eller den anden måde er sigende for kontemporær kultur.

Denne udstilling er et initiativ til at skabe en dialog mellem objekt og beskuer. Vi inviterer jer hermed til at udforske resultatet – Maker’s Dimension”.

Alle Studerende har løst den opgave, de har stillet sig selv, med dedikation. Det er en fin udstilling.

Som det fremgår, af både invitationen og af filmen, er de studerende reflekterede og i stand til at formulere deres projekt, der som jeg læser det, tager afsæt i et ønske om at finde sin plads i verden, som menneske og som kunstner.

De studerende, med undtagelse af Maria Kildahl Mathiasen som har lavet et te-stel, foretrækker at udtrykke sig i kunstneriske objekter snarere end i brugsobjekter, ikke på bekostning af optagethed af materiale og teknik, men i samarbejde med materiale og teknik.

Hvis det er på bekostning af noget, eller hvis der er et tab forbundet med deres valg, så er tabet på min side, jeg holder aldrig op med at glædes over smukke brugsgenstande, og synes i høj grad at glas og keramik får sin skønhed i brug. Om verden har brug for flere kopper og tallerkner? Strengt taget ikke, med streng taget har vi vel ikke brug for noget som helst?
