MULTITASKING

August 2022

Life cycle, annual wheel, design process – whatever we do, there is a similar rhythm, even if it takes on different forms.

First you plant a seed, then you nurture and wait patiently, and then you harvest. And then you start over.

This is literally the way it is when you farm the land and grow crops. It is also like that when I produce a bookazine, and it was like that many years ago, when I worked as a fashion designer.

In HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 6 I portrayed three companies that work with grain (and bread), each in their way.

If you have not read the articles in the bookazine, you can find a sample here, hereandhere.

Grain is topical, because it is August, which is harvest time, because grain is now worth its weight in gold due to the war in Ukraine and, above all, because grain has been our most important source of food since the dawn of time.

Speaking of bookazines: six weeks from now, the new bookazine comes out. One of the features in this latest issue is an illustrated six-part story about the process of producing a bookazine, from seed to harvest. The main theme of bookazine no. 7 is construction.

I invite you to come along as I visit an architect, a design company, a blacksmith, a brazier, a bricklayer, a joiner and a thatcher. You can also see how bathroom tiles with a high content of crushed disused bricks are made and you can learn about painting with egg tempera. The story about the creation of the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine contains side stories about textiles, glassware, ceramics, food and drink.

You can order your copy of the new bookazine here along with no. 8, which I have just begun working on.

The theme of no. 8 is fashion. For this theme, of course, I draw on my experiences from the fashion industry. For the past several years, I have not been paying very close attention to this industry, but now I return for a look at its whims and fads with particular emphasis on the craft behind its ever-changing expressions.

Maybe I’ll see you at Copenhagen Fashion Week, which takes place on 9–12 August? In any case, the following week I will share my impressions from the event.

That same week I will also report back from the annual Crafts and Design Fair at Frue Plads in Copenhagen, which takes place on 11–13 August. Maybe I will see you there too?
This year I have the honour of being one of the three jurors for the fair. The other two jurors are textile designer Dorte Østergaard and architect Lars Vejen. As jury members, we choose who will receive this year’s Håndfuglen (Hand Bird) as exhibitor of the year, based on an overall impression of objects/products and presentation.

I am looking forward to it all, and I’m excited to be planting, nurturing and harvesting, all at once. Who said ‘multitasking’?

Derefter starter man forfra.

Bookazine no. 7 handler i øvrigt mest om bygningshåndværk.
