Sea buckthorn

If the only purpose was the practical task of maintaining healthy skin, the bathroom shelf would only need to feature a very limited range of products.

That is how it would be for a true minimalist
but not for me.

Part of the reason is that skincare is also about the more sensuous satisfaction, which includes the products’ scent (or absence of scent) and feel. Also, I’m curious.

August 2023

From HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 8:

M Picaut Swedish Skincare is a repeatedly award-winning Swedish skincare concept established in 2010 by nurse and former model Mette Picaut.

The products are made in Sweden from mostly organic ingredients.

I encountered M Picaut shortly after it was launched and sold it online at slowfashionhouse.com (an online shop that existed from 2008 to 2013).When Mette Picaut launched the concept, it included just four products: Nourishing Cleanser, Hydrating Water, Precious Oil and Skin Perfect Moisturiser, reflecting a ‘less is more’ philosophy.

That was a principle that appealed to my customers and myself. The active ingredient was sea buckthorn, a small berry with anti-aging properties stemming from its high content of vitamins A, B, C and E as well as vitamin B, zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium.

Sea buckthorn contains 190 bioactive substances. In combination, they have a revitalizing, protecting and healing impact on the skin.

Sea buckthorn has a high level of helpful fatty acids and is anti-inflammatory.

It helps improve pigment changes over time due to its high content of vitamin A.

It also contains beta carotenes, which protect the skin against sun damage, and salicylic acid, which has anti-inflammatory, cell-renewing and gentle exfoliating effects.

Sea buckthorn remains a signature ingredient in 12 of the products, but today, there are many more products and a wider range of active ingredients, including coal, algae and aventurine.

I asked Mette:
Since you launched the series, it has been expanded considerably. Did you lose sight of your original goal, or did you set a new one? Why is less no longer more?

That is a good question, and less is still more. But in the sense that each product should be as complete as possible. That means you need to use very few products at a time.

Personally, I vary my routine from time to time in order to keep my skin alert. Naturally, all the products in the series can be combined.

This development has happened organically and with great inspiration from the requests we receive from the 160 skincare clinics we work with in Sweden’.

What have you learned about skincare over the years?
That you need to be patient and kind, also towards yourself and your skin. To care for your skin barrier, you should use the mildest products you can find.

If you have a problem, you should see a good skincare therapist. Above all, you should avoid quick fixes using harsh products recommended by influencers who know nothing about skin and skincare’.

What have you learned about running a business?
I remember you nodded, years ago, when I compared running a business with mushroom hunting: you have to look in the usual places, where you can usually find a good crop, but you also need to dare seek new paths or go even further afield, to entirely new areas. In this unexplored area, you might suddenly discover bright little mushrooms everywhere. That is still my philosophy today’.

What has life taught you about living?
That it’s important to pause and ask yourself, what gives me joy?

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018, and I went through a rough patch before I regained my balance.

Living with chronic disease compels you to revisit and reconsider all your previous choices and priorities.

I realized that I had stagnated and had almost stopped finding joy in what I was doing. Instead, I was on autopilot, I was working far too much, and I was taking my work far too seriously. A classic trap for entrepreneurs.

I have searched for alternative and more holistic alternatives as a supplement to the traditional treatment with immunosuppressive medicine. Behavioural change takes time, but now I have regained my balance. I work much less and make it a priority to go horseback riding and to spend time in nature, where I am truly in my element. I am on a wellness journey, and that gives me joy’.

Derfor behøver man meget få produkter ad gangen.
