SLOW FASHION

It’s time for the annual Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Well, not in real life but virtually. Actually, ‘real life’ might be a bit of a stretch. Truth be told, there is probably a good share of fashion as we have known it for years that does not belong in the real world but rather in someone’s dream – or nightmare.

But that’s a topic for another time!

Last year, exactly one year ago, in the so-called real world (of fashion) in Copenhagen, I met the Finnish design brand Myssy, which makes woollen beanies. That encounter was one of my most uplifting experiences during the Fashion Week. I did not write about it at the time because I was waiting for Myssy to send me one for a photo. They must have been busy or something, at least, it took a long time to show up, and it was spring before it got here. By then, it was too warm for the season, and that is why you are only seeing it now. Slow fashion indeed!

Myssy is an alias for Janne and Anna. They live on a farm in Pöytyä, Finland. Here they make food products. They also buy hand-dyed local wool, which they have a group of elderly local women and one man turn into knitted beanies. The beanies (and hats and scarves) are sold in trend-setting shops around the world.
No shops in Denmark joined the list last year, but never worry: you can buy from Myssy’s web shop. Here you can also buy a DIY kit and knit your own beanie.

Why do I think it’s such a neat company and such a neat product?

I like a simple, focused concept, and if you stick to knitting woollen beanie, you can get really good at it. It makes sense to base your production on local makers and locally sourced wool, and it is encouraging to see that it is possible to base a viable business on this concept.
Above all, I think the caps look great. I still think so today, a year after our first encounter. And yes, I have noticed that the current trend for women’s headgear calls for balaclavas, but I am going to skip that trend, which some call ‘Anna-and-Lottecore’ in reference to the puppet characters in a popular Danish children’s TV show. Instead, I think of Myssy as ‘cottagecore’, which is more up my alley.

I just love the rose-coloured beanie Myssy sent me. I have since bought a kit and am knitting myself a grey one. If the pandemic shutdown has not already got you knitting, a Myssy beanie is a great place to start. It is knit on chunky knitting needles and can be finished in an evening. It is also a good beginner’s kit for a child who is just learning to knit.

*Cottagecore (related to grannycore and farmcore) A lifestyle choice based on connectedness with nature, baking one’s own bread, growing one’s own crops, brewing one’s own beer and so forth. The cottagecore community and concept are driven mainly by social media, an aspect that may seem like a paradox. That is not necessarily the case, however; the lifestyle does not represent a desire to turn back the clock but instead a decision to move forward at a different pace and in a new direction. As with everything else, it is also an aesthetic sensibility, and some people are mainly into the aesthetic without embracing the underlying lifestyle that it represents.

Det er modeuge igen, ja altså ikke i den virkelige verden, men digitalt. Virkelig og virkelig, når sandheden skal frem, så er der nok en hel del af moden, som vi har kendt den i mange år, som ikke hører til i den virkelige verden, men snarere i nogens drøm eller nogens mareridt. Det kan vi tale om en anden gang!

Sidste år, for præcis et år siden, i den såkaldt virkelige (mode)verden i København mødte jeg finske Myssy, som fremstiller uldne huer. Faktisk var det møde noget af det mest opløftende, jeg oplevede på modeugen. Blot skrev jeg ikke om det, fordi jeg ventede på, at Myssy skulle sende mig en hue til foto. De fik travlt eller et eller andet, i al fald gik det langsomt med den hue, og det var forår, inden den nåede frem. Den var for varm og uaktuel, og derfor får I den først at se nu. Meget langsom mode!

Myssy er et alias for Janne og Anna. De bor på en gård i Pöytyä i Finland. Her fremstiller de fødevarer. Desuden opkøber de håndfarvet lokal uld, som de får ældre nabokvinder og en enkelt mand til at strikke huer af. Huerne ( foruden hatte og tørklæder) sælger de til drønsmarte butikker rundt omkring i verden.
Der var ingen smarte butikker i Danmark, som bed på krogen sidste år, men pyt, Myssy har heldigvis webshop på deres hjemmeside. På webshoppen kan man også købe et kit og strikke selv.

Hvorfor jeg synes, at det er så fin en virksomhed og så fint et produkt?

Jeg kan godt lide et simpelt og fokuseret koncept, hvis man kun strikker huer, bliver man rigtig god til det. Det giver mening at producere med lokale hænder af lokal uld, og det er opløftende at se, at det kan der faktisk komme en forretning ud af.
Mest af alt synes jeg, at huerne er pæne, også et år efter første møde, og jo, jeg har godt set, at det nu er elefanthuer, såkaldte balaclavas til voksne kvinder, som gælder, men jeg hopper over den trend, som går under betegnelsen Anna og Lotte-core. Til gengæld så kunne man uden at fornærme nogen tale om *cottage-core i forbindelse med Myssy, og den er jeg mere på!
Jeg er blevet så glad for den rosa huse, som Myssy sendte mig, at jeg nu har købt et kit og strikker en grå selv. Hvis du ikke allerede er gået i corona strikke-selv mood, så er en hue fra Myssy en god begyndelse, den strikkes på tykke pinde og er færdig på en aften. Den er også et godt begynderstrikketøj til et barn, som skal lære at strikke.

*Cottagecore (i familie med grandmacore og farmcore)
Et livsstilsvalg hvor man dyrker nærheden til naturen, bager sit eget brød, dyrker sine egne afgrøder, brygger sin egen øl osv. osv. Cottage-core dyrkes på de sociale medier, hvilket umiddelbart kunne se ud som et paradoks. Det er det ikke nødvendigvis, stilen repræsenterer ikke et ønske om at gå tilbage, men et valg om at gå fremad i et andet tempo og i en ny retning. Som med alt andet så er det også en æstetik, og en del af dem som dyrker æstetikken, dyrker ikke livsstilen.
