HÅNDVÆRK bookazine

English translation: Dorte H Silver

About a year ago, when I asked Katrine Martensen-Larsen to contribute to the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 3 in a conversation about ‘finding one’s way home’, I was unaware that she would soon be releasing The Season, a coffee-table Christmas book, co-created with photographer Mikkel Adsbøl, that invites the reader inside 12 artists’ homes. Nor did I know that she had agreed to open her own home to Kunstsalonen (Art Salon).

But she had, and the doors in her and her family’s modernist house on Emanuel Olsens Vej in Frederiksberg are now wide open for the event. You can buy her book here. The HÅNDVÆRK bookazine, where you can read about Katrine, is available here.

Kunstsalonen is a series of curated exhibitions in varying private homes that are open to the public. The event was founded in 2017 by Anne Aarsland, a visual artist with an MA in art history and visual culture from the University of Copenhagen, and Mette Helena Rasmussen, a Master of Fine Arts graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Rasmussen is also known as a host of the TV 2 series Nybyggerne (The Settlers) and in her role as an influencer, where she shares glimpses of her life for advertising purposes. One moment you’ll see her in lingerie, the next moment she’ll be in the kitchen cooking with her children – and besides, of course, she speaks widely about art and the role it can play in our life.

With an unconventional, and in many ways liberating, approach to art and art appreciation Kunstsalonen uses marketing methods that are more familiar in other fields. Some might argue that TV celebrities snapping photos of each other in front of paintings and sculptures get in the way of art. Others might counter that it really makes no difference whether they or the cultural elite are the ones getting in the way.

Fact is that Kunstsalonen is an arena where many who previously paid no attention to art are now beginning to take an interest, which is clearly in everyone’s interest, not least the artists’.

– And the artists? They are queuing up to exhibit at the salon!
