THE CABINETMAKERS’ AUTUMN EXHIBITION 2020

The Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition is a membership organization founded in 1981 by a group of manufacturers and designers with the purpose of developing and organizing an annual exhibition of new and experimental furniture characterized by excellence in functionality, craftsmanship and artistic expression.

August 2020

Each year, the members are challenged by a new theme and a new location. This year is no different. Since the coronavirus pandemic has been dominating the agenda in most companies this year, the biggest challenge has been the need to navigate in unknown waters under dangerous circumstances.

The pandemic is not the topic of this exhibition, and the setting is neither unknown nor dangerous.

On the contrary: the setting is Copenhagen’s beloved Tivoli Gardens, more specifically the Parterre Garden design by Poul Henningsen and Gudmund Nyeland Brandt for Tivoli’s centenary celebrations in 1943.

The theme this year is ILLUSIONS – an obvious choice in a garden brimming with illusions. A garden that holds a special place in the heart of most Danes and many tourists; a garden that contains a varied, beautifully curated mix of old-school entertainment and culture. A garden with its own well-defined Tivoli aesthetic, where too much of a good thing is just right.

Judging by the exhibits, the members have enjoyed the challenge, the invitation to be playful and the opportunity of drawing inspiration from funhouse mirrors, Ferris wheels and herbaceous borders. The result is 30 very different furniture pieces/installations, each piece containing thoughtful references and qualities. Several of the furniture designs are ready to be put into production, others are more explorative and challenging, and some are more installation art than conventional furniture design. They are all worth seeing and contemplating.

ILLUSIONS is on display in the Parterre Garden until 4 October 2020.

The exhibition contains 30 furniture designs. A catalogue with descriptions of the individual pieces is on sale from the Tivoli Box Office, the gift shop Little Tivoli and the Garden Deli, which is right next to the exhibition area.
