VANDKUNSTEN ARCHITECTS

Vandkunsten Architects is an award-winning architecture firm in Copenhagen.

The studio was founded in 1970. The current group of owners and partners comprises 10 architects, among them Søren Nielsen. It has 75 employees, among them architect Katrine West Kristensen.

The firm is guided by strong values with regard to both the company’s social responsibility and its environmental impact and resource consumption.

Vandkunsten Architects works with everything from affordable social housing to long-term urban development strategies and the transformation and renovation of existing properties. As it has been from the beginning, the architecture firm remains focused on architecture that facilitates community-building and creates living, changeable settings. 
The firm’s architecture is created in dialogue with the users and informed by the way people think, play and work and how they wish to live. The studio uses the term ‘self-grown’ to describe both the approach and the aesthetic expression. 

In HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 7 you can meet Katrine West Kristensen and Søren Nielsen in a former machine room at Holmen in Copenhagen where Vandkunsten Architects now has its offices. The two architects have offered to shed some light on what it means to be an architect in 2022 and, in particular, what it means to be a Vandkunsten architect.

I asked them:

Are there any special aesthetic choices involved in sustainable construction? Or is it an implicit feature of an architect-designed building that is necessarily based on healthy, high-quality and durable natural materials?

Katrine answers ‘It’s not something you can take for granted. I know architects who can only see the beauty in uniform, neutral surfaces. 

It is crucial to demonstrate the aesthetic potential of materials that can stand the test of time. You need to train your eye to grasp the beauty that lies in change and aging. A building doesn’t have to keep looking the way it did when it was handed over. Why is the unused look an ideal?’ she replies.

 

I am reminded of a passage in Træ (Wood), a book by Vandkunsten Architects that was published by Arvinius + Orfeus

In an essay titled ‘Materialer er magt’ (Materials are power) Søren Nielsen reflects on this fear of aging. He argues that we are projecting our ideals for the human body on buildings, believing that they too should look perfect. He believes that wood, with its natural aging process, might have a therapeutic effect for humanity, after we have lost our sense of our role on earth and are denying our most basic condition, which is aging, disease and death.

Søren, who has been with Vandkunsten Architects for 33 years, joins us and explains that the studio has its roots in ‘cultural radicalism’ – a free-thinking liberal movement in Denmark that was particularly strong during the interwar years – and in critical views of the industrial suburban architecture of the 1970s. To this day, the studio has maintained this critical view of current developments and power structures in society in general and in construction in particular.

We are less client-oriented and more user-oriented, and we refuse to deliver the glossy pretend-genteel architecture that is in common demand today.

He continues, ‘Our profession is in deep crisis. On the surface, things look great, but most of what is being built, despite the sky-high selling prices, is so impoverished that it has no place in our kind of society. In a poorer country, people would apologize for the flaws and shortcomings, but in our privileged country, we shrug it off, claiming that’s just the way it is – identical, mindless concrete boxes papered over with brick.

Tegnestuen Vandkunsten er en mange gange prisbelønnet arkitektvirksomhed i København.

Tegnestuen blev etableret i 1970. Dens nuværende ejer/partnerkreds består af 10 arkitekter, herunder Søren Nielsen. Tegnestuen beskæftiger 75 medarbejdere, herunder arkitekt Katrine West Kristensen.

Tegnestuen er funderet i stærke værdier både i forhold til social ansvarlighed og i forhold til miljø- og ressourcemæssig ansvarlighed.

Vandkunsten beskæftiger sig med alt fra billige almennyttige boliger til langsigtede strategier for byudvikling over transformation og renovering af eksisterende ejendomme. Ligesom da tegnestuen blev etableret, har den nu fokus på arkitektur, som faciliterer fællesskaber og skaber levende, foranderlige rammer.
Arkitektur, som derfor skabes i dialog med brugerne og tager afsæt i den måde, mennesker til enhver tid tænker, leger og arbejder på, og den måde, hvorpå de ønsker at bo. Tegnestuen benytter vendingen ‘selvgroet’, både om muligheden og om æstetikken.

I HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 7. kan du møde Katrine West Kristensen og Søren Nielsen fra Vandkunsten, som holder til i en gammel maskinhal på Holmen i København, som de har transformeret om til tegnestue. De vil hjælpe mig med blive klogere på, hvad det indebærer at være bygningsarkitekt i 2022, og i særdeleshed hvad det vil sige at være arkitekt, når man har Vandkunstens perspektiv.

Jeg spurgte, er der særlige æstetiske valg at træffe i forbindelse med at bygge bæredygtigt? Eller ligger det implicit, at en arkitekttegnet bygning er baseret på gode og sunde langtidsholdbare naturmaterialer?

Katrine svarer, “Det er ikke en selvfølge alle steder. Jeg møder også arkitekter, som kun kan se skønheden i neutrale, rene flader.

Det har stor betydning at vise det æstetiske potentiale i materialevalg, som kan stå distancen over tid. Man behøver træne øjet til at forstå al den skønhed, som findes i forandring og patinering. En bygning behøver ikke at blive ved med at se ud, som da den blev afleveret. Hvorfor er det et ideal at se ubrugt ud?”, svarer hun med et spørgsmål.

Jeg kommer i tanke om en passage fra bogen TRÆ, som Vandkunsten har udgivet på forlaget Arvinius + Orfeus.

Søren Nielsen reflekterer i afsnittet “Materialer er magt” over aldringsforskrækkelse. Han skriver, at vi har projiceret vores ideal om kroppens udseende over på bygningen, og at den derfor skal fremstå perfekt. Han mener, at træet, der patinerer naturligt, kan spille en terapeutisk rolle i forhold til en menneskelighed, som har mistet overblikket over sin rolle på Jorden og fortrængt sit mest banale vilkår, nemlig alderdom, sygdom og død.

Samme Søren, som har arbejdet på Vandkunsten i 33 år, forklarer, at Vandkunsten har rødder i kulturradikalismen og i en slet skjult kritik af 70’ernes industrialiserede forstadsbyggeri. Tegnestuen forholder sig også i dag kritisk sig til, hvad der sker i samfundet og til de styrende kræfter i byggeriet.

“Vi er ikke så kundeorienterede, læs bygherreorienterede, vi er brugerorienterede og nægter at levere de blankpolerede, fattigfine byggerier, som efterspørges af mange.”

Han fortsætter: “Vores fag befinder sig i en afgrundsdyb krise; på overfladen ser ud, som om det går godt, men det meste af det, som bygges, er, selvom det sælges dyrt, så forarmet, at det overhovedet ikke hører hjemme i vores type af samfund. Hvis man stødte på det i et fattigere land,

ville man beklage fejl og mangler, i vores privilegerede land konstaterer vi med et skuldertræk, at ‘sådan er vilkårene’. Der er tale om ens, visionsløse betonkasser beklædt med murstenstapet.”
