SPRING LUXURY

Vibeke Rohland is an artist – a textile artist, to be precise. Her work lies in extension of a long international tradition where artistic work and commercial design nourish and inspire each other in an equal balance.

She mentions several role models or, as she puts it, colleagues whom she respects deeply, including Anni Albers (1899–1994), Sonia Delaunay (1885–1879), Eva Hesse (1936–1970), Hannah Ryggen (1894–1970), Agnes Martin (1912–2004) and Rosemarie Trockel (1952–).

She lives and works in Gammelholm in central Copenhagen behind the Royal Danish Theatre. It is as close to Paris as Copenhagen gets, and Vibeke is the essence of ‘une Parisienne’: petite, cool and chic with a perfect, casual style; an artist with an intellectual approach.

Vibeke’s studio is close to where the family has lived for many, many years, and in order to put a bit of distance between one and the other, she goes round the block twice before she parks her bicycle and opens the door to her basement studio.

Vibeke is disciplined and works many hours every day, whether or not she has a client, and whether or not she has an upcoming exhibition.
She not only alternates between artistic and commercial work, between sketches and finished designs or works, but also from narrative and wild to stringent and graphic.

Vibeke’s working method is always analogue, based on hand tools, printing frames and pigments. For sketching, her preferred tools are pencil, chalk, Indian ink and various types of paint.

Speaking of chic …

She has previously, in periods, created hand-painted scarves. Moveable images that change depending on how they are worn, by whom and with what.

It is a long time since her latest series saw the light of day; the scarves have given way to bigger art projects and to design tasks. In December 2019, when I was taking photographs at Vibeke’s for the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 2, the only scarves I could spot were the ones I glimpsed on her notice board. She was not quite sure if she even wanted to make any more scarves. But every cloud has a silver lining. For Vibeke, as for the most of us, the ongoing corona pandemic has led to new challenges and changed plans. Vibeke found the time to paint on silk and rediscovered the enjoyment of making scarves. We are many who appreciate that.

‘My scarves are a link between fashion and art. A canvas, just as a T-shirt can be. The scarf communicates effectively, and there have always been scarves, across the ages and in every culture. I like the way it can be folded up and fit into a pocket or a small bag or tied decoratively around the strap of your bag. It can keep you warm or cool, and you can use a scarf to tie your outfit together,’ says Vibeke as she stands in front of my door, handing over a bag full of scarves for the photo shoot. In a beautiful and casual outfit, with a big scarf around her neck that just ‘happens’ to be a perfect match for her pink lipstick.

Vibeke Rohland er kunstner, tekstilkunstner. Hendes virke ligger i forlængelse af en lang international tradition, hvor kunstnerisk arbejde og arbejdet med kommercielt design trives ligeværdigt side om side og i dyb afhængighed af hinanden. Selv peger hun på forbilleder, eller som hun udtrykker sig, fagfæller, som hun har stor respekt for, som Anni Albers (1899-1994), Sonia Delaunay (1885-1879), Eva Hesse (1936-1970), Hannah Ryggen (1894-1970), Agnes Martin (1912-2004) samt nulevende Rosemarie Trockel (1952-).

Hun bor og arbejder på Gammelholm bag Det Kgl. Teater. Tættere på Paris kommer man ikke i København, og Vibeke er indbegrebet af ’une Parisienne’; hun er petit, cool og chik på den helt rigtige, casual facon og kunstner på den intellektuelle måde.

Vibekes atelier ligger tæt på, hvor familien har boet i mange, mange år, og for at få lidt afstand mellem det ene og det andet cykler hun en ekstra runde omkring blokken, inden hun parkerer og åbner døren til sit kælderatelier. Kælder eller ej, der er højt til loftet i dobbelt betydning.

Vibeke arbejder disciplineret og mange timer hver dag, hvad enten hun har en kunde eller ej, og hvad enten hun har en udstilling i sigte eller ej.
Hun veksler ikke bare mellem kunstnerisk og kommercielt arbejde, mellem skitser og færdige design eller værker, men også mellem fabulerende og flagrende og stramt og grafisk.

Vibeke arbejder altid analogt. Med håndværktøj, trykrammer og farvepigment. Når hun skitserer, er de foretrukne redskaber blyant, kridt, tusch og forskellige former for maling.

Apropos chik –

Hun har tidligere, ad mange omgange, håndmalet tørklæder. Bevægelige billeder som forandrer sig, afhængig af hvordan de bæres og af hvem, sammen med hvad.

Det er længe siden, sidste portion så dagens lys, tørklæderne har veget for større kunstneriske projekter og for designopgaver. Da jeg i december 2019 fotograferede hos Vibeke til HÅNDVÆRK Bookazine no.2, var de eneste tørklæder, jeg kunne spotte, de som kunne anes på hendes opslagstavle. Hun var endda ikke helt sikker på, om hun ville lave flere tørklæder overhovedet. Men intet er så skidt, at det ikke er godt for noget. Den igangværende coronapandemi har for Vibeke som for de fleste andre budt på både udfordringer og ændrede planer. Vibeke har fået tid til at male på silke og har genvundet lysten til tørklæder. Det er vi mange, som glæder os over.

”Mine tørklæder er en kobling mellem moden og kunsten. Et lærred på samme måde som en t-shirt kan være det. Tørklædet kommunikerer effektivt, og der har været tørklæder til alle tider og i alle kulturer. Jeg kan lide, at det kan foldes sammen og være i en lomme eller en lille taske, eller det kan bindes dekorativt om taskens strop, det kan lune eller svale, og man kan ved hjælp af tørklædet binde hele sit udtryk sammen”, siger Vibeke, da hun står foran min dør og afleverer en pose med tørklæder til foto, smukt og casual klædt, med et stort tørklæde om halsen som ”tilfældigvis” passer perfekt til hendes rosa læbestift.
