Textile design

Denmark is a nation of design enthusiasts. Many of us have opinions about design.

There are many really talented and acclaimed Danish designers. Many of them design textiles. Some of the textile designers also master product development.

Some of the ones who master product development are also knowledgeable about production.

Among the ones who are knowledgeable about production, a few have in-depth experience with sustainable production.

September 2021

Marie Louise Rosholm (MLR), whom I have mentioned both online and in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 2, ‘the textile issue’, is a textile designer. She has been engaged in design, product development of production her whole working life and specializes in sustainable production.

That makes her a sought-after partner in the design industry. In a Danish context, her latest project is cushions and throws for Would. During this year’s 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, from 16 to 19 September, Mentze Ottenstein and Rosholm launch a new collaborative series beautiful throws and cushions in wool and silk called The Cocoon, created for MENU.

Mentze Ottestein is an alias for the two architects Mathias Mentze and Alexander Ottestein.

Marie Louise speaks highly of her collaboration with them and MENU as an inspiring and playful experience that has drawn on her own back catalogue of knowledge about sustainable textile production as well as her vast catalogue of samples developed during her long career in design.

Later this fall, the Japanese brand MUJI will launch a series of interior products in linen designed and product-developed by MLR. MUJI has shops in a large number of countries, including in Denmark where you can find them in the Illum department store.

Under her own name, MLR recently launched a small collection of merino wool throws and cushions. A collection with distinctly Scandinavian references and a simultaneously solid and airy quality with a deep colour play emerging from the encounter of the weaving technique and the colours of the yarn.

On her website, where you can also buy the products, MLR offers an excellent and transparent description of materials and production as well as advice on how to handle the products, both in use and in their ‘afterlife’.

I am a huge fan of solid professionalism!
