A MAGNIFICENT SETTING

Line Depping and Skagerak

The Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition 2018 which presented in the magnificent halls of Thorvaldsen’s Museum.

As you may know, the museum was designed by architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll with the main purpose of housing the models for Thorvaldsen’s marble sculptures. The finished sculptures are found in locations around Europe. It is a beautiful museum with a unique colour scheme and a profound sense of generosity in both the overall architecture and the finer details.

Every year, the non-commercial association the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition stages an exhibition whose theme and location are selected by the board. The association membership includes 81 manufacturers and designers; in addition, the annual exhibition always includes guest exhibitors from Denmark and abroad.

The purpose of the exhibitions is to promote and develop contemporary and experimental Danish furniture design.

MONO, this year’s exhibition

This year’s theme, or artistic motif, is MONO: one colour, one material and one form to represent the individual designer’s personal monologue and the ensuing dialogue with Thorvaldsen’s sculptures and Bindesbøll’s architecture and interiors. The MONO concept has led to many interesting, creative and surprising pieces at the intersection of furniture and art installation and many beautiful prototypes of new furniture designs with commercial potential.

A highly successful exhibition where the setting provided inspiration but also called for reflection and humility. It is a big, powerful setting, as Line Depping said when I ran into her at the opening, adding that the surroundings may seem a little daunting.

Line has nothing to feel nervous about. Partnering up with manufacturer Skagerak, she has created the most beautiful oval sidetable with room for storage – precisely the sort of table I would like to take home right now.

Another manufacturer who shines in a successful partnership is the young master cabinetmaker Mathias Overvad – I wrote about him in my book HÅNDVÆRK (2018). Mathias exhibits at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in collaboration with the Icelandic designer Dögg Guðmundsdóttir. Together, they present a serving trolley inspired by the carts that were used to move Thorvaldsen’s sculptures from the Copenhagen Port to the museum when Thorvaldsen and his artworks returned to Copenhagen after his 40-year sojourn in Rome, arriving shortly before the museum’s opening.

Mathias also produced a small, beautiful Shaker-inspired tray table designed by Philip Bro Ludvigsen.

All in all, an uplifting experience, in terms of both the artistic content and the excellent craftsmanship on display. Thank you to all the passionate nerds out there, both the idea makers and designers and the people whose craftsmanship, material knowledge and experience go into giving the designs tangible form.
