Book gifts on my desk

Before the Christmas holidays, several books landed on my desk. I found time to read two of them, both on utilitarian ceramics, in between the holiday events and get-togethers.
One of the two is dedicated to the topic of cups.

In bookazine no. 1, Nanna Egebjerg Jensen – the woman behind the concept of Yonobi, which is both an online ceramics gallery and a ceramics school in Copenhagen, Odense and Aarhus – mentions that she always asks visitors to choose their own cup. At the time, Nanna had a gallery in Copenhagen. She said, ‘I am a firm believer that art and beauty are experienced through use. YŌNOBI means “beauty through use” in Japanese.

Bookazine no. 1 has long since sold out, but now you can begin to look forward to no. 12. If you have a subscription, the bookazine will arrive in your mailbox during the week leading up to the official release date, on 27 March.

The book The Cup and the Ceramist (with parallel Danish and English text) has text by ceramist, speaker and educator Claus Domine Hansen and photographs by Flemming Hansen. The two also worked together on the books Håndbog i studiokeramik (Handbook of Studio Ceramics) and Keramik – kom godt i gang (Ceramics: Get Off to a Good Start).

An exhibition of the same title as the new book was shown at the Centre for Arts and Crafts – Grønbechs Gård on the island of Bornholm this fall. Until May 2025, it is on display at Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen. The book, which has a foreword by museum curator Anne Cathrine Wolsgaard Iversen of Designmuseum Danmark, was released in connection with the opening in Copenhagen.

The book and the exhibition present 30 Danish ceramists: Signe Bailey, Pia Baastrup, Agnethe Schmidt Bigum, Christian Bruun, CLIB KLAP (Iben Harboe and Claire Maria Lehmann), Ane-Katrine von Bülow, Lisbeth Skytte Christiansen, Thilde Graulund, Ninna Gøtzsche, Helle Hansen, Malene Møller Hansen, Helenaa Hedegaard, Anne Mette Hjortshøj, Sverre Tveito Holmen, Dorte Kristoffersen, Mark Lauberg, Ann Linnemann, Pia Lund, Louise Mathiesen, Priscilla Mouritzen, Birgitte Munck, Mie Mølgaard, Lars Rank, Malene Sandal, Hans Vangsø, Rikke Wulff, Gitte and Aage Würtz and the author, Claus Domine Hansen.

The latter set himself the task of creating a cup that not only pleases the eye and fits well in the hand but also perfects its function as a teacup. To ensure that the foundation is in order, Claus Domine Hansen worked with tea enthusiasts from the European Speciality Tea Association Denmark. In the book and exhibition, he presents his process of arriving at what he believes is the perfect teacup.

I recently saw the exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, which, incidentally, had record visitor numbers in 2024. The exhibition works well and includes an entire room dedicated to Claus’s quest of creating the perfect cup. This presentation gives a much better insight than the book into the huge amount of work that goes into the creation of a ceramic craft object, including the ceramic material and the production process, in this case slipcasting.

Cups by the other makers are lined up on a long table, and here, the eye naturally searches for favourites. As Carsten Bagge Laustsen comments in his book 100 års dansk keramik (100 Years of Danish Ceramics), which I write about here, being a Danish ceramicist is a broad concept, also in terms of style, and some pieces feel more familiar than others.
In addition to the long table showing contemporary ceramics, several display cases present cups from near and far, in both time and place.

My one complaint about the exhibition is that when you venture further into the museum, you encounter the exhibition In the making, which has a whole wall dedicated to … cups. Although it could be argued that the cup is to makers and industrial designers what the dining chair is to the cabinetmaker, surely, one exhibition on cups is enough for one museum.

The book The Cup and the Ceramist, published by Trykværket, is an excellent companion to the exhibition and provides insight into many different methods, but as an independent publication, it is not as convincing as the duo’s two previous publication, if you ask me.

Inden juleferien landede flere bøger på mit skrivebord. To af dem, begge om keramik, ovenikøbet begge om brugskeramik, har jeg nået at læse mellem højtidens festligheder. Den ene handler om koppen.

I bookazine no. 1. siger Nanna Egebjerg Jensen som står bag konceptet Yonobi, som dels er online keramikgalleri, dels keramikskole i København, Odense og Århus, at hos hende vælger gæsterne altid deres egen kop. Nanna, som den gang havde galleri i København sagde, ”jeg tror inderligt på at kunst og skønhed opleves gennem brug. Yonobi betyder ”skønhed gennem anvendelse” på japansk”.

Bogen Koppen og keramikeren (med dansk og engelsk tekst), er skrevet af keramiker, foredragsholder og underviser Claus Domine Hansen og fotograferet af Flemming Hansen, de to har tidligere arbejdet sammen om fagbøgerne Håndbog i studiokeramik” og ”Keramik- kom godt i gang”.

En udstilling med samme titel blev først vist på Bornholms Center for Kunsthåndværk Grønbechsgaard på Bornholm i efteråret, og nu, siden november 2024 og frem til maj 2025, på Designmuseum Danmark i København. Bogen, som har forord af museumsinspektør Anne Cathrine Wolsgaard Iversen, blev lanceret i forbindelse med åbningen i København.

Sidstnævnte har stillet sig den opgave ikke bare at fremstille en kop, som behager øjet og ligger godt i hånden, men som også fungerer perfekt som tekop. For at få forudsætningerne på plads har han entreret med te-entusiaster fra Dansk Tesammenslutning (nu European Speciality Tea Association Denmark (ESTAD), og han illustrerer både i bogen og på udstillingen sin proces frem til det, som han mener at kunne kalde den perfekte tekop.

Jeg har netop set udstillingen på Designmuseet, som i øvrigt i 2024 har haft et rekordhøjt besøgstal. Den fungerer godt, et helt rum er dedikeret til Claus´ arbejde med den perfekte kop. Man får her, langt bedre end det lykkes i bogen, indtryk af det enorme forarbejde, der ligger til grund for et stykke keramisk kunsthåndværk, og for det keramiske materiale og fremstillingsprocessen, som i det her tilfælde foregår som støbning.

Kopper fra de øvrige keramikere er linet op på et langt bord. Her søger øjet naturligt efter favoritter.
Som Carsten Bagge Laustsen siger i sin bog 100 års dansk keramik, som er omtalt her, så er det at være dansk keramiker et vidt begreb også stilmæssigt, og noget føler man sig mere familiær med end andet.
Foruden det lange bord med keramik fra i dag, pryder et antal montre med ældre kopper fra nær og fjern.

Eneste anke ved udstillingen er, at bevæger man sig længere ind i museet kommer man til udstilling ”In the making”, som har en hel væg dedikeret til netop koppen. Nok kan man vove den påstand, at koppen er for kunsthåndværkere og industrielle designere, hvad spisestuestolen er for snedkere og møbelarkitekter, men én udstilling med kopper i samme museum er tilstrækkeligt.

Bogen Koppen og Keramikeren, som er udgivet på Trykværket, er et fint supplement til udstillingen, og giver indblik i mange forskellige metoder, men som selvstændigt værk er den ikke så stærkt, som de to fagbøger makkerparret tidligere har udgivet, hvis du spørger mig.
