Restoring balance

I am back at my desk after a few busy weeks around the launch of HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 15.

Honestly, I find it a little difficult to settle back down, despite the natural beauty all around me in of my new location.

October 2026

Yes, I have moved my office out of the city. In the editorial introduction to HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 15, I write,

‘Welcome to HÅNDVÆRK bookazine 15, on the theme of transformation. Speaking of transformation: in the photo, I am standing in front of the door that has been mine for the past ten years. Before the bookazine hits the shelves, this door will be closed, and another will have opened.

HÅNDVÆRK moves from Frederiksberg to Kerteminde – from Zealand to Funen.

And even though the purpose remains the same – publishing bookazines about people with knowledge, skills and passion and about crafts as the basis for food, fashion, design, architecture and art – I am excited to see where this will lead.’

Many years ago, when I had just moved to Stockholm, I came across a self-help book. I don’t recall the title or the author’s name, but the book was about restoring your own calm in order to pass it on to your children. Based on the principle of ‘Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others’.

The book contained a number of mantras for meditation. One of them has stayed with me, and ever since, it has worked for me every time I felt I was struggling to maintain my balance:

I CHOOSE TO EXPERIENCE THIS MOMENT.

‘I choose to experience this moment,’ I think, as I sense autumn all around me and collect walnuts and apples from the grass in the back garden.

‘I choose to experience this moment,’ I think, as I read in Emmy Laura Pérez Fjalland’s book Skumringsvers fra den sydskandinaviske regntid (Twilight Verses from Southern Scandinavia’s Rainy Season).

I am a fan of Emmy’s work. My husband bought the book for me in connection with the previous bookazine launch, but I never finished it. Later, the publisher, Informations Forlag, sent the book to me as a gift. Now, I have returned to the book, and I feel a growing sense of gentleness and kindness as I read Emmy’s poetic descriptions of nature matched with almost dystopian portrayals of environmental disasters and disconcerting changes.

Emmy Laura Pérez Fjalland was born in 1987 in Colombia, was raised in Denmark and is based in Copenhagen. She holds a PhD in geography, and her research draws on ethnographic, collaborative and site-specific methods.

Among many other activities, she publishes the newsletter Jordbo (Earthling) on the platform Føljeton. Currently, her newsletters are less frequent, because she is on maternity leave. All the more delightful, therefore, to see her recent release:

‘It’s difficult to write while I’m out there pushing the pram around. And it’s difficult to write while my child sleeps in my arms. And when the older children come home and want to share the big and small experiences of the day. And when homework, laundry and meals demand attention. But that is how it is right now, and that’s fine with me. Because the words stay with me. They almost swarm along the paths, snuggle in the tea towels, the birch forests and the pumpkin soup, pop up during night-time breast-feeding and on the children’s soft cheeks. But I want you to know that I felt the urge to write when the elders and bird cherries were in bloom, when the forest grew fat and green, and digitalis strode across woodland clearings; when the oak processionary caterpillars arrived, and fear spread with them; when the night was much too awake in the heat; and when I discovered a peatbog full of white beak-sedge, and two cranes took to the wing so majestically.’

She concludes:

‘Becoming a mother for the third time feels just as exuberant and overwhelming, as glorious and tremulous as it did the first two times. My time on maternity leave runs like water through a sieve, and while I try to find my footing in this wild world, I eat a piece of apple pie and bake some rolls for the children’s lunch packs.’

I continue reading, as I smell the rye bread in the oven. Soon, I will have restored my balance and will be ready to pour most of my energy into HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 16, which will come out when spring has returned.

I lederen i HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 15 skriver jeg

Blandt mange andre aktiviteter udgiver hun nyhedsbrevet Jordbo via platformen Føljeton.
