Facts about MUJI from HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 5:

MUJI was founded in Japan in 1980. The company makes and sells no-brand products for an audience with an interest in design, sparsely packaged and often made of natural materials, in the categories of paper/office supplies, interior items, bath, kitchen and clothing.

At the time of writing, there are 900 big and small MUJI shops around the world. Some of them in local partnerships, as is the case in Copenhagen.

The company’s European headquarters are in London, where the first European MUJI opened in 1991 in the Liberty department store. In Scandinavia, MUJI is represented in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen.

The HÅNDVÆRK bookazine launch event is hosted by MUJI BOOKS next to MUJI TeaHouse on 30 September 2022 at 16.00–17.00.

This piece is about the tea at MUJI TeaHouse – or, rather, about the woman who makes sure the TeaHouse has a superb selection of quality tea to be enjoyed on the premises or to take home.

It is about Mette Marie Kjær.

Mette, who is 51, trained as an artist in Prague and New York and holds a master’s degree in photography and fine art. A German professor at the academy in Prague sparked her interest in philosophy and inspired her to study what happens to a society when its cultivation process stops. 

Later by accident, she came across the Japanese tea culture, with its ceremonies and its ability to cultivate and elevate a person’s state of mind, and felt compelled to see if she might be able to transplant it to Copenhagen. That was 16 years ago.

She was successful. In fact, the effect was quite magical, she says. ‘I didn’t dictate anything. People simply changed their behaviour because of the setting I provided.’ The setting also served as a venue for lecture nights with a focus on philosophical topics.

That continued for many years, initially at one Copenhagen location, later at a different place in the city.

During the Covid pandemic, Sing Tehus (Sing Teahouse) closed down temporarily, and since then, the company, which has a staff of seven, has been selling tea to private customers online, supplying tea to restaurants and cafés, including curating the tea selection at MUJI TeaHouse, and, of course training MUJI’s staff, just as Sing trains everyone who serves the company’s tea. Mette has also held tea ceremonies at her own home, Gjorslev Estate, in southern Zealand.

I was delighted when MUJI asked me to help set up MUJI TeaHouse, and I enjoy our ongoing collaboration. Unbeknownst to MUJI Copenhagen, I have previously worked with MUJI Japan on several occasions, and in a way, MUJI Copenhagen is the closest you can get to Japan in Denmark,’ says Mette.

Soon, Sing Tehus opens again in Copenhagen. Ready to cultivate and elevate over a cup of carefully prepared niche tea, selected with great care among the crops of local small-scale growers around the world. Growers whom Mette visits and has a personal relationship with. Growers who know that biodiversity, handed-down experienced and hard manual labour are the conditions for a superb result. Growers who depend on international tea enthusiasts who appreciate and pay for their product.

As Mette’s project, Sing Tehus is an art form and a philosophy but also a business with a powerful vision that is about to be put on a formula with a B Corp Certification.

This art form is waiting to be manifested in the new Sing Tehus and, hopefully, in additional Sing teahouses in other countries over the coming years.

‘Many places deserve a Sing Tehus,’ says Mette. ‘For example, I would love to open one in Tokyo. Not because they don’t have teahouses, but they don’t have what I can offer. I want to give back what I have learned from their culture, filtered through my own. Sing can show them a more open and welcoming version of their own incredibly refined, ancient tradition. A little more casual, less awestruck but with deep respect.’

MUJI blev grundlagt i Japan i 1980. Virksomheden producerer og sælger no brand-produkter til et designinteresseret publikum, sparsomt emballeret og ofte i naturmaterialer i varekategorierne papir/kontorartikler, indretning, bad, køkken og beklædning.

Der findes i skrivende stund 900 større eller mindre MUJI-butikker på verdensplan. Nogle af dem med lokale samarbejdspartnere, som det gør sig gældende i København.

Virksomhedens europæiske hovedkontor ligger i London, hvor også den første europæiske MUJI blev åbnet i 1991 i varehuset Liberty. I Skandinavien findes MUJI i Helsinki, Stockholm og København.

HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 7 lanceringseventet bliver afholdt af MUJI books ved siden af MUJIs Tehus d. 30. september 2022 kl. 16.00-17.00

Her skal det handle om husets te – eller rettere om den kvinde, som har sørget for at Tehuset har et udsøgt sortiment af kvalitets te at drikke på stedet og at købe med hjem.

Det skal handle om Mette Marie Kjær.

Mette, som er 51 år, er kunstuddannet fra Prag og NY, hun har en master i fotografi og fine art. Det var en tysk professor på akademiet i Prag som vakte hendes interesse for filosof og ansporede hende til at beskæftiget sig med hvad der sker når et samfund holder op med at kultivere sig.

Senere opdagede hun ved en tilfældighed den japanske tekultur, dens ceremonier og deres evne til netop at kultivere og løfte sindstilstanden, og så sig nødsaget til at undersøgelse, om hun kunne få det til at virke i København. Det er 16 år siden.

Det virkede, det var ret magisk fortæller hun, ”det var ikke fordi jeg dikterede noget, folk ændrede blot adfærd, fordi der var udstukket rammer. Rammer som også gav mulighed for at holde foredragsaftner om filosofiske emner”.

Sådan gik mange år, først med adresse et sted i København K, siden på en anden adresse.

I skyggen af Coronapandemien lukkede Sing Tehus midlertidigt og virksomheden, som beskæftiger syv mennesker, har siden da solgt te på nettet, solgt til restauranter og cafeer herunder kurateret udvalget af te i MUJIs Tehus, og naturligvis uddannet MUJIs personale. På samme måde uddanner Sing i øvrigt alle, som serverer deres te. Mette har desuden afholdt te ceremonier på Gjorslev Gods på Sydsjælland hvor hun bor.

”Jeg var glad for at blive bedt om at hjælpe med at etablere MUJIs Tehus, og det løbende samarbejde er godt. Hvad MUJI i København ikke vidste dengang var, at jeg af flere gange tidligere har arbejdet med MUJI i Japan, og MUJI i København er på en måde, det nærmeste man kan komme Japan i Danmark”, forklarer hun.

Snart åbner Sing igen eget Tehus i København. Klar til at kultivere og løfte stemningen over en kop nørdet niche te, udvalgt med største omhu hos små lokale avlere rundt omkring i verden. Avlere som Mette besøger og har et personligt forhold til. Avlere som ved at biodiversitet, nedarvet erfaring og hårdt manuelt arbejde, er forudsætningen for at præstere det ypperste. Avlere som er afhængige af, at internationale te-entusiaster værdsætter og betaler for deres produkt.

Mettes projekt Sing Tehus er en kunstform og en filosofi, men også en forretning med en stærk vision. Visionen er snart sat på formel med en B Corp Certificering.

Kunstformen venter på at blive foldet ud i det nye Sing Tehus og gerne i årene fremover i Sing Tehuse i andre lande.
”Der er mange som fortjener et Sing Tehus”, siger Mette. ”Jeg vil for eksempel gerne åbne i Tokyo. Ikke fordi de ikke har te huse. Men de mangler det jeg kan. Jeg vil give tilbage af det jeg har lært af deres kultur, filteret gennem vores kultur. Sing kan vise dem en mere åben og imødekommende version af deres egne utrolig fine ældgamle tradition. Lidt mere casual, ikke så frygtsomt, men i stor respekt”.
