VIOLET ADVENT

Candlelights Alterlyset, Ceramics Julie Damhus, Spoon Kay Bojesen, Tablecloth Lovely Linen

In my childhood home, violet was the colour of Advent, while red was reserved for Christmas Eve.
I still favour that distinction; I love shades of violet and minimize the use of red. Meaning, I (joyfully) hang red decorations and ornaments on 23 December and box them all up again on the 26th.

The liturgical colours of the Church year are the colours that are used in vestments and other ecclesiastical textiles to mark the different times and seasons during the Church year or specific ecclesiastical ceremonies. Violet symbolizes spirituality, seriousness, passion, repentance and atonement. Violet is used during Advent and Lent.

That ought to mean violet candles in the Advent wreath; it doesn’t, this year, but it does mean violet Christmas calendar candles, now that they are available.
This year’s 24-day Christmas countdown candle comes from Alterlyset/Hyggelyset

The 24-day countdown candle burns for about 35 hours in total – plenty of time to make your breakfast time extra cosy throughout December!

Mille Marence, who is fourth generation candlemaker in the family company, explains:
‘When we make our candles, we use 100% vegetable palm oil stearin certified by RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil).
The candles are handmade in Denmark, and each one has its own unique character. The stearin and a specially made cotton wick ensure a big, beautiful flame and a slow, even burn that is both environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic.’
She highlights the importance of trimming the wick to a length of 0.5 cm before lighting the candle.
She also explains that if the flame flickers, the candle should be put out and then relit, and that it should be kept away from draughts, all of it in the effort to avoid air-polluting soot.

Happy Advent!
