Let’s talk paper

At the time of writing, HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 10
is at the printer’s.

I previously introduced you to my printing company here.

Now, I would like to introduce you to the paper you hold in your hands when you read a HÅNDVÆRK bookazine.

February 2023

Sometimes, I am asked whether it wouldn’t be better to switch to an all-digital publication format.

My answer is always NO.

I like publishing online, both at haandvaerkbookazine.com and on social media. But I am convinced that the topic of the bookazine, thoroughness and craftsmanship, is best communicated in a physical format: a bookazine made by skilled craftspeople on quality paper.

But don’t I need to rethink this to minimize my carbon footprint?

Absolutely!
All told, the CO2 emission per bookazine is about 0.8 kg.

Digital production is far from carbon-neutral, but for now, we have no well-documented methods for calculating the carbon emissions of online publishing.

In terms of publishing on paper made from wood fibre, Nordic and EU paper mills and forestry generally have a strong focus on sustainability.

In the EU today, forestry operations are beneficial for the woods. Every time a tree is felled, it is replaced by so many new trees that European woodland is currently increasing with every year. In recent years, the total amount of forested land has grown by an area the size of Denmark.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, about 45% of Europe’s toral land mass is forested.

The bookazine is printed on Munken Lynx 130 g. Like all paper used by Specialtrykkeriet Arco / Lazertryk, Munken is FSC®-certified.

Munken is produced by Arctic Paper Munkedals in Sweden, a paper mill in the town of Munkdal, 100 km north of Gothenburg. Like many other Swedish towns that developed around industrial production, Munkedal developed around the paper mill.

Today, Artic Paper Munkedals is an international company that delivers high-quality paper and a European leader in sustainable paper manufacturing.
The company is both FSC- and Cradle to Cradle-certified and has one of the lowest levels of water consumption per ton of paper produced.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council®) aims to promote environmentally, socially and economically sustainable forestry.
Good forestry ensures that trees are felled in a way that maintains the forest’s biological diversity, productivity and ecological processes. To be certified, forestry practices also have to enable locals and natives to benefit from the forest.

Forestry should be economically profitable but not at the cost of nature or people. The FSC label ensures that the materials used in the products come from responsibly managed forests or other controlled sources.
To earn FSC certification, both the suppliers of raw materials and the paper manufacturer must provide full traceability to guarantee that the materials used are in compliance with the certification requirements.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is an internationally approved, third-party-verified product certification programme with an emphasis on circular economy. It is designed as an efficient tool for taking part in the green transition, developing new products and business models and establishing helpful collaborations throughout the value chain.

Cradle to Cradle certification documents that the company has a serious approach to the circular economy and recycling, that it has full knowledge of the chemical components in its products and aims to phase out any harmful substances and that it takes responsibility for its climate footprint and is working to transition to renewable energy sources.

There are four certification levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The product or company needs to be recertified every second year. The first Cradle to Cradle certification process involves the development of a plan for continual improvement leading to the Platinum level.

Arctic Paper Munkedals in Sweden earned a Silver certificate on 1 February 2024.

HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 10 is released on 21 March 2014: 160 pages with a focus on art.

If you ask me, it’s a Platinum issue!

You can preorder your copy here or wait for the bookazine to land in a kiosk, bookshop, museum shop or design shop near you.

If you are in Denmark on 21 March, you are hereby invited to the bookazine release event. Read more about the event here.

I disse dage trykkes HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 10
