BOOK GIFTS
November 2021
In my latest post, I suggested that you consider choosing the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine when you shop for Christmas presents. In extension of this theme, I generally think book gifts are always a great idea, as long as the books are written by authors with a passion for their topic and, in this case, like myself, have ‘skin in the game’ because they self-publish.
(Generally, I recommend that you buy Christmas presents from people who have something at stake and a passion for what they do.)
The books I mention below are ambitious publications, each in their way, and both were printed by Narayana Press, which enjoys cult status among book enthusiasts.
Fakta
The graphic company and printing house Narayana Press has been based in Kalsemade near the town of Gylling in western Denmark since 1972, when it was founded by students of the Indian writer and philosopher Swami Narayanananda. Today, the company has about 40 employees, many of whom live in the almost completely self-sufficient community associated with the firm. The printing house itself occupies the parallel white buildings; in extension of these lie the greenhouses. In the foreground, three temples form a distinct axis, and the red-roofed buildings contain a meditation hall, a dining hall and a kitchen, among other functions, while the black-roofed buildings are living quarters.

If you are looking for a gift for someone who is a lover of natural wine or if you would like to introduce this particular universe to newcomers, I recommend Camilla Gjerde’s ‘We Don’t Want Any Crap in Our Wine’ (with English text).
Camilla has a PhD in political science and a diploma in wine and spirits, but above all, she is passionate about natural wine – or, perhaps more accurately, about the conditions of growing and producing natural wine – and she is fascinated by the dream that motivates natural wine growers. Her own dream was to write a book that she felt was missing: a book about women who produce natural wine. She realized this dream in collaboration with photographer Cecilia Magnusson: together, the two toured Europe by train and on bicycle on a quest to portray nine amazing women, who are living out their dream, for better and worse, with lots of hard work.
You can order the book here; soon it will also be available from selected book shops throughout Scandinavia.
The other book I will recommend is Katrine Martensen-Larsen’s ‘Living With Art’ with English text and with photographs by Mikkel Adsbøl.
Katrine realized the significance of having art in her own home last year when she hosted Kunstsalonen (The Art Salon), which arranges public art exhibitions in private homes. Among the artists portrayed in the book is Anne Aarsland, who is one of the founders of Kunstsalonen.
‘Living With Art: From creator to collector’ takes you on visits to ten artists’ studios and then follows ten works of art on their path to nine art collectors and the author’s own home.
In addition to Katrine’s own texts on artists and collectors, the book includes contributions from
Todd Bishop (former senior deputy director at MoMA NY): ‘A Perspective from Abroad”
Frederikke Aagaard, architect (MAA): ‘Art Should Test You’
Natalia Gutman, art historian: ‘Forever Art’
Jannik Martensen-Larsen (Katrine’s brother, owner of Tapet Cafe): ‘The Effect of Art in an Interior Setting’
‘Living With Art’ is available here and in a number of design and museum shops.

” We Don´t Want Any Crap in Our Wine” bogen er med engelsk tekst.
Todd Bishop, (former senior Deputy Director at MoMA NY) “A Perspective from Abroad”
Frederikke Aagaard, Architect MAA”Art Should Test You”
Natalia Gutman, Art Historian ”Forever art”
Jannik Martensen-Larsen (Katrines bror, ejer af Tapet Cafe) ” The Effect of Art in an Interior Setting
”Living With Art” Kan købes her og i en lang række design-og museumsbutikker.
