THE WALL PAPER FACTORY

Emma von Brömssen and Daniel Långelid
July 2022

As human beings, we have always decorated our surroundings, including embellishing our walls with murals, colour or wallpaper. The earliest wallpapers, in the modern sense, were possible in part thanks to Louis-Nicolas Robert, a Frenchman who in 1798 invented a method for producing long lengths of paper, and in part thanks to the English textile printer Charles Potter, who in 1839 patented a method for roller printing on paper.
The industrialization of wallpaper production with printing machines and rollers had its breakthrough in the Scandinavian countries during the second half of the 19th century.
Denmark no longer has a wallpaper industry, and we do not use wallpaper nearly as much as our Swedish neighbours. When we do hang wallpaper in Denmark, we often choose a Swedish product.

The classic Svenskt Tenn patterns designed by Josef Frank during the 1940s appeal to many people.
My affinity for Svenskt Tenn has brought me to Ulricehamn in the Swedish county of Västra Götaland.

One track at Ulricehamn Tapetfabrik track is production for external cooperation partners, Svenskt Tenn e.g.
The other track is design collaborations,

Långelid/von Brömssen is one of these partners.
Emma von Brömssen and Daniel Långelid both graduated, some years apart, from Gothenburg University, Academy of Design and Crafts.
When they first met in 2007, Daniel was working as a pattern designer at Sandberg Tapet in Ulricehamn, and Emma was a student doing a traineeship at the factory.
Daniel left Sandberg in 2009 and has since worked with product and spatial design in several different contexts, including both fashion and interior design.
In 2018, when Emma had long since established a successful and award-winning business as a pattern designer, they began to talk about establishing a partnership.

The timing proved to be perfect, and the idea gained further momentum when Daniel learned that his two former colleagues Anna and Thomas from Sandberg Tapet had bought the factory in Ulricehamn and were planning to establish a new type of business based on design partnerships.
After a short planning phase, they founded the wallpaper design studio Långelid/von Brömssen with production at Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik. Their collection ‘LvMVol 1’ was launched in 2019 and was very well received, both in Sweden and abroad.
The two designers have their own unique styles but design the colour scheme together.

Svenskt Tenn wallpaper
