TIL:VÆRKS
Is an exhibition venue for architecture, crafts and design in Copenhagen’s Østerbro district, founded in 2023 by the architects Else‑Rikke Bruun and David Bülow Jacobsen.
The gallery’s exhibitions, which range from artistic and/or methodological experiments to new, concrete projects and products, are always relevant and inspiring.
TIL:VÆRKS occupies a former laundry on Livjægergade.
The exhibition space has floor-to-ceiling windows,
and the exhibitions can always be viewed both from outside and inside the gallery.

Currently (5 February to 14 March 2026) TIL:VÆRKS is showing the exhibition ARKETYPER (Archetypes) by Eske Rex and Maria Mengel.
Eske Rex (b.1977) is a designer and artist, a trained carpenter/joiner and holds a degree a furniture and space design from the Danish Design School (now Royal Danish Academy, Design). Since 2009, he has had an independent artistic practice at the intersection of crafts, sculpture and architecture.
Maria Mengel (b.1977) is an architect and teaching associate professor at the Royal Danish Academy’s Institute of Architecture and Culture. She is a cofounder of the floating working collective De Metaforiske Huse (The Metaphorical Houses) and the alternative art school ANARK.
Eske and Maria, who are a couple privately, run a joint studio. Its biggest project to date is the couple’s self-built home in Copenhagen’s Sydhavn district, which was completed in 2025.
When I last visited the gallery, Else‑Rikke spoke passionately about this house and about the exhibition, which was under preparation at the time, and which I have now visited – Eske and Maria’s first joint art exhibition.
As much as the exhibition can be seen from both outside and inside, it does not lend itself to being represented in photos. Perhaps it could be captured with a wide-angle lens, but I do not really care for that view. Instead, I will simply offer a small selection and encourage you to go see the exhibition for yourself.
In the middle of the room – above the area where the laundry machines used to stand, and where you can still see traces of the platforms they stood on, a premise for everyone exhibiting at the gallery – Maria and Eske built a large … cottage, fort, tipi, church or loft.
When I arrived, I heard Else-Rikke ask on behalf of visitors whether the installation has a spiritual purpose? Eske’s spontaneous answer was, ‘If they think so.’
Spiritual or not, it is certainly a unique space to be in. Because of its size, which almost forces visitors to sidle around the structure, it is a powerful presence in the exhibition space, which features some of Eske’s pieces from a previous exhibition: figures as tall as a person, with strong references to boat-building, and furniture they designed for their own home, not for production – ‘but you never know where it might go,’ Eske comments.
On the end-wall, there is a curtain reminiscent of a coat of arms, designed for a large round window in their home. The curtain features a drawn map of Mozarts Haveforening (Mozart Allotment Association), where they live, with stylized potato-printed human figures. Most of the figures are blue, a few are red; the red figures mark where the children’s friends live.
‘I actually imagined I would continue printing during the exhibition,’ says Maria, with an implied ‘we shall se …’.
When the couple were invited to present a joint exhibition, they knew that they wanted to base it on their house, where they used traditional wooden structures combined with geometric light apertures and other openings. That it would take the form of a cabin, fort, tipi, church or loft was not decided until two weeks before the exhibition opening – which only makes the installation all the more fascinating and relevant. It is a beautiful illustration of their architectural methods and choices – all the way down to their chosen type of paint (linseed oil paint) and surface finish (dark beer with pigment).
‘It’s nice to do a collaborative presentation after many years of solo projects,’ says Eske. ‘Even though we are life partners and act as each other’s sounding boards, presenting a joint project is something else.’
Maria adds, ‘It’s much easier to talk about a joint project than to talk about yourself.’
Right now, in addition to the exhibition, they are also discussing a decorative project for a culture centre in Elsinore, which they recently won in a sketch competition. You can learn more about the project on their respective Instagram accounts: @eske.rex and @maria_mengel.

Eske Rex (f. 1977) er designer og kunstner, uddannet tømrer/snedker og Møbel- og Rumdesigner fra Danmarks Designskole. Han har siden 2009 haft en selvstændig kunstnerisk praksis i krydsfeltet mellem kunsthåndværk, skulptur og arkitektur.
Maria Mengel (f. 1977) er arkitekt og studielektor ved Institut for Arkitektur og Kultur på Det Kongelige Akademi. Hun er medstifter af det flydende arbejdskollektiv De Metaforiske Huse og den alternative kunstneriske skole ANARK.
Eske og Maria, som er par privat, driver en fælles tegnestue, hvis foreløbigt største projekt er deres selvbyggede hus i Københavns Sydhavn, som stod færdigt i 2025.
Da jeg forrige gang besøgte galleriet, talte Else‑Rikke passioneret om huset og om den udstilling, som da var under forberedelse, og som jeg nu har besøgt – parrets første fællesudstilling.
Lige så meget som udstillingen kan betragtes både udefra og indefra, lige så lidt kan den gengives på foto – måske med et vidvinkelobjektiv, men det er jeg ikke vild med. Derfor her bare et udsnit og en opfordring til at se med egne øjne.
Midt i rummet – hen over hele det område, hvor vaskemaskinerne tidligere har stået, og hvor der er spor efter deres sokkel, en præmis som alle galleriets udstillere må underlægge sig – har Maria og Eske bygget en stor … hytte, hule, tipi, kirke eller et loftrum.
Da jeg kom, hørte jeg Else-Rikke spørge på vegne af besøgende, om installationen har et spirituelt formål? Eskes spontane svar var: “Hvis de synes.”
Spirituelt eller ej – det er i hvert fald et meget særligt rum at opholde sig i. Og fordi den er så stor, at man nærmest må kante sig rundt om den, gør den også noget særligt ved det øvrige rum, som parret har fyldt med nogle af Eskes værker fra en tidligere udstilling: mandshøje figurer med stærke referencer til bådbygning og møbler tegnet til deres hjem og ikke med henblik på produktion – “men man ved aldrig, hvor det bærer hen,” siger Eske.
For endevæggen hænger et våbenskjoldslignende gardin tiltænkt et stort rundt vindue i deres hjem. På gardinet er tegnet et kort over Mozarts Haveforening, hvor de bor, og der er stiliserede mennesker trykt med kartoffeltryk: de fleste blå, nogle få røde – de røde er dér, hvor børnenes venner bor.
“Jeg havde egentlig forestillet mig, at jeg skulle arbejde videre med at trykke under udstillingen,” fortæller Maria med et underforstået, vi får se.
Da parret blev spurgt, om de ville lave en fælles udstilling, vidste de, at de ville tage afsæt i deres hus, hvor de har arbejdet med traditionelle trækonstruktioner og forskellige geometriske lysåbninger og udskæringer. Men at det skulle materialisere sig som hytte, hule, tipi, kirke eller loftrum, blev først besluttet 14 dage inden udstillingens åbning – hvilket ikke gør installationen mindre betagende eller relevant. Den illustrerer på bedste vis deres forskellige arkitektoniske greb og valg – helt ned til valg af malingstype (linoliemaling) og overfladebehandling (mørk øl med pigment).
“Det er dejligt at samarbejde efter mange år alene,” siger Eske. “Selvom vi har fulgtes gennem livet og på den måde været hinandens sparringspartnere, er det noget andet at stå på mål for projekterne sammen.”
Maria supplerer: “Det er meget lettere at tale om et fælles projekt end at tale om sig selv.”
Lige nu taler de – foruden om udstillingen – om en udsmykningsopgave til et kulturhus i Helsingør, som de netop har vundet i en skitsekonkurrence. Mere om projektet kan ses på deres respektive Instagram‑konti: @eske.rex og @maria_mengel.
