Triumph & Catastrophe

If you have not already visited CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark in the town of Middelfart, there are currently three good reasons to go there.

Flat Craft, an exhibition by graduates from the bachelor’s programme Crafts in Glass and Ceramics 2022 at the Royal Danish Academy – Design, Bornholm (the exhibition at CLAY only features the ceramics graduates). The presentation is on display at CLAY until 20 November 2022.

From here it moves to Bygning A in Copenhagen from 25 November 2022 to 8 January 2023, where it is joined by the glass graduates. Among them is Marie Breyen Hauschildt, whom I met when I visited the school to write and take photographs for an article in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 6.

Morten Løbner Espersen
Triumph & Catastrophe

Morten Løbner Espersen attended L’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art (now ens aama), Duperré in Paris and graduated from the Danish Design School in Copenhagen (now Royal Danish Academy – Design) in 1992.

This exhibition is his largest so far and shows both the depth and the width of his work.

It’s the repetition that is interesting. On their own, they’re nothing special,’ I overheard another visitor say to their friend about the string of small vases adorning two of the walls in the exhibition hall.

I do not agree. Every one of these vases is a gem in its own right. But it is true that it is interesting to see them side by side, because such a display reveals the thoroughness, persistence and acceptance of chance – triumph and catastrophe – that are a condition for a life dedicated to ceramics and, in Morten Løbner Espersen’s case, particularly to glaze.

It is quite outstanding for someone to dedicate their life to a material, a craft and an artistic practice.

From gems to insistent, powerful rocks. The exhibition’s main attraction is a sublime and extensive production of classical cylinders, vase-shaped objects and sculptures in organic shapes.

This is an over-the-top display in terms of both colour exuberance and sharp-eyed grasp of form. The works are presented on slate-coloured podiums in a chocolate brown and a midnight blue room with touches of sunshine yellow. Brown and blue create a calm mood and do the vessels and objects justice, while the yellow challenge them.

If you are not yet convinced of the level of skill and knowledge underlying a practice such as this, you can lose yourself in the wall of glaze samples – they speak a language everyone can understand.

All in all, a highly accomplished exhibition.

Hvis du ikke allerede har besøgt CLAY Keramikmuseum Danmark i Middelfart, så er der lige nu tre gode grunde til at lægge vejen forbi.

Flat Craft, som er afgangsudstilling fra bachelorprogrammet ‘Crafts in Glass and Ceramics’ 2022 på KADK Bornholm (på Clay kun keramikeleverne, vises i Middelfart frem til 20. november 2022.

Morten Løbner Espersen er er uddannet fra École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués, Duperré i Paris (nu ens aama) og Danmarks Designskole i København, hvorfra han tog afgang i 1992.

Udstillingen, som er hans hidtil største viser både dybden og bredden i hans virke.

”Det er gentagelsen som er det interessante, hver og en er de ikke noget særligt”, hørte jeg en anden besøgende sige til sin ven, om den perlerække af små vaser som pryder to af udstillingsrummets vægge.

Det er jeg ikke enig i. Hver og en af de små vaser er en juvel. Men det er korrekt, at til sammen er de interessante, fordi de bevidner den grundighed, vedholdenhed og accept af tilfældighedernes spil, – triumf og katastrofe, som er hele forudsætningen for et liv i keramikkens, og i Morten Løbner Espersens tilfælde, i særdeleshed glasurens tjeneste.

Det er særligt at vie sit liv til et materiale og til et håndværk og en kunstnerisk praksis.

Fra juvel til insisterende kraftfulde klipper. Udstillingens hovedattraktion er en overlegen og omfattende produktion af både klassiske cylindre og vaseformede objekter, og organisk formede skulpturer.

Her er ingen smalle steder, hverken i forholdet til farveglæde eller formmæssigt boldøje. Værkerne præsenteres på skifferfarvede podier i et henholdsvis chokoladebrunt og midnatsblåt rum, med indslag af solskinsgult. Det brune og blå giver ro og yder krukker og objekter retfærdighed, det gule udfordrer.

Er man endnu ikke overbevist om hvor meget kunnen og viden der ligger bag et virke som dette, kan man kaste sig over væggen med glasurprøver, de taler et sprog alle kan forstå.

– en alt i alt meget vellykket udstilling.
