AETHER
Art Centre Silkeborg Bad is always worth a visit, and the current exhibition,
AETHER, is an interesting and inspiring instalment in a series of nature-themed exhibitions.

Nature. Not as it appears in Danish Golden Age paintings, although the view from the window in the large hall at the Art Centre, which faces Silkeborg Lake, might look like a Golden Age scenery – if, that is, you ignore the recent flooding that has left the trees half-submerged. The waterlogged surroundings are a reminder of the ongoing climate change, which can no longer be dismissed as a series of once-in-a-century incidents or natural variation.
This awareness frames the way I see the exhibited works, all created under the common theme of AETHER.
In classical philosophy and physics, the aether is a mysterious, clean substance that fills the space around us. Aether also became a metaphor for all the things we cannot measure or quantify.
By challenging their material, the artists turn their physical domain into a bridge between two worlds, as the exhibition programme explains – and, I would add, a bridge between dark and light, hope and fear, natural and manmade, what is explicable and the aethereal qualities that defy explanation.

All the artworks were created specifically for the exhibition and presented across several different exhibition rooms and contexts in the beautiful building, which has a lot to offer any exhibition.
Art Centre Silkeborg Bad is an independent institution. It was founded in 1992 at the initiative of Silkeborg Municipality, the independent institution Silkeborg Theatre, the then Tourist Association for Silkeborg and Gjern and then Realkredit Danmark. The founders are all represented on the board of the art centre.
The art centre resides in a building that previously housed the hydropathic facility Silkeborg Bad (Silkeborg Spa). The name, ‘Art Centre Silkeborg Bad’, thus reflects both past and present.
Today, the place presents varying exhibitions of art from Denmark and abroad, mainly created by living artists.
A professional staff of ten regular employees handle day-to-day operations of the art centre, buildings and grounds with the assistance of an additional staff of 85 volunteers.

KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad er altid en udflugt værd, og den aktuelle udstilling ÆTER er seværdig, inspirerende, og endnu en i rækken af udstillinger, som interesserer sig for naturen.
-Naturen, ikke som i guldaldermaleriet, selvom et kig ud gennem vinduet i kunstcenterets store sal, som vender ud mod Silkeborg Sø, umiddelbart ligner et guldaldermaleri, – hvis altså ikke lige det var for oversvømmelsen, og træerne som står i vand til langt op ad stammerne, og dermed minder os om klimaforandringerne, som ikke længere kan afvises som 100-årshændelse eller naturlig variation.
I det lys læser jeg udstillingens mange værker, som er skabt under overskriften ÆTER.
– Det historiske begreb ÆTER – æter som det ubestemmelige ”æteriske”, rene, luftformige stof som ifølge klassisk filosofi og fysik fylder himmelrummet. – Æter som metafor for det, der ikke kan måles og vejes.
Ved at udfordre deres materiale, bliver kunstnerens fysiske domæne til en bro mellem to verdner, står der i programmet – og jeg vil tilføje: bro mellem det mørke og det lyse, mellem håb og frygt, mellem naturligt og menneskeskabt, mellem det som kan forklares og det æteriske.
Udstillingens titel og koncept er formuleret af de to danske kunstnere Vinni Frederiksen og Ane Fabricius Christiansen, som også selv medvirker sammen med:

Alle værker er produceret til udstillingen og man støder på kunstnerne i flere forskellige rum og sammen hæng i det smukke hus, som har meget at tilbyde til en hver ophængning.
KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad er en selvejende institution. Den blev stiftet i 1992 på initiativ af bl.a. Silkeborg Kommune, den selvejende institution Silkeborg Teater, daværende Turistforeningen for Silkeborg og Gjern samt daværende Realkredit Danmark. De nævnte stiftere har plads i institutionens bestyrelse.
Institutionen har til huse i nogle af de bygninger, som i sin tid hørte til kurstedet Silkeborg Bad. Navnet ”KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad” afspejler dermed både fortid og nutid.
Nu præsenteres skiftende danske og internationale kunstudstillinger, fortrinsvis med nulevende kunstnere.
En professionel medarbejderstab på 10 fastansatte står for den daglige drift af både kunstcenter, bygninger og parkområde. Dertil kommer 85 frivillige, som hjælper til med forskellige opgaver.
