I was thrilled when I heard about Kähler’s latest collaboration: the Kantarel (Chanterelle) series.  created by the Danish-Icelandic ceramic artist and designer Thora Finnsdottir, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen in 2009

Just as Denmark has a strong tradition for designer furniture for a wide audience (for example, read about Wegner here), we also have a tradition for decorative art: craft objects put into systematic production and thus made accessible to a broader section of the public than more expensive one-off pieces.

Several of the companies that have traditionally provided us with high-quality objects for everyday use, Some of them, Holmegaard and Kähler, are now part of the Rosendahl brand, and production is no longer local. It is what is, and we should be grateful to Rosendahl for existing and for managing part of our design legacy.
What is worse, however, is that the development of new products no longer necessarily happens in collaboration with decorative artists with knowledge of and experience with the material they are designing for. On the contrary; here, as in many other industries, there has been a tendency to aim for a broad commercial reach by partnering with someone who has a large number of followers on social media, rather than prioritizing product design with the potential to last longer. 

Therefore, I was thrilled when I heard about Kähler’s latest collaboration: the Kantarel (Chanterelle) series.  created by the Danish-Icelandic ceramic artist and designer Thora Finnsdottir, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen in 2009.

The Kantarel series includes a vase, a candleholder and a small dish.

Thora Finnsdottir has a deep interest in biology and bases her sketches and modelling on thorough studies. In collaboration with Kähler’s production specialists, she has created a new series with a visual expression that is reminiscent of classic Kähler pieces and which brings form, material and glaze together in sublime fashion. An achievement that is only possible when the development process has been in the hands of someone who knows their trade.

Congratulations to Kähler, congratulations to consumers – and thanks to Thora Finnsdottir.

I Danmark har vi – ligesom vi har en solid tradition for arkitekttegnede møbler til den brede befolkning (læs fx om Wegner her) – en tradition for kunstindustri: kunsthåndværk sat i system og produktion og dermed gjort tilgængeligt for en bredere del af befolkningen, end det gør sig gældende for den noget dyrere unika.

Flere af de virksomheder, herunder Holmegaard og Kähler, som traditionelt har forsynet os med brugsting af høj designmæssig og materialemæssig kvalitet, er i dag samlet under brandet Rosendahl Group, og produktionen foregår ikke længere lokalt – det er, hvad det er, og tak til Rosendahl for at findes og for at tage vare på en del af vores designarv.
Hvad værre er, er, at udviklingen af nye produkter ikke længere nødvendigvis foregår i samarbejde med formgivere med forstand på og erfaring med det materiale, de formgiver i. Tværtimod har der – her som i mange andre brancher – været en tendens til at satse på stor markedsføringsmæssig rækkevidde gennem samarbejdspartnere med mange følgere på sociale medier, frem for på produktdesign med potentiale til at holde længere.

Stor var derfor min glæde, da jeg blev præsenteret for Kählers nyeste samarbejde med den dansk-islandske keramiker Thora Finnsdottir, uddannet fra Det Kongelige Akademi i 2009, om serien Kantarel.

Kantarel består af en vase, en stage og et lillebitte fad.

Thora Finnsdottir har en dyb interesse for biologi, og det er grundige studier, som ligger til grund for hendes skitser og modelarbejder. Disse er – i samarbejde med Kählers produktionsmedarbejdere – blevet til en ny serie, som samtidig har en visuel identitet, der leder tankerne i retning af klassisk Kähler, hvor form, materiale og glasur har fundet hinanden på fineste vis. Noget, som kun lader sig gøre, når udviklingsarbejdet har været i hænderne på én, der kan sit fag.
